The Department of Chemistry is proud to celebrate Dr. Colleen Scott, associate professor of chemistry, for her selection as a 2026 American Innovator Award recipient by the Bayh-Dole Coalition. This national recognition honors researchers whose federally funded discoveries have moved beyond the laboratory toward meaningful real-world impact.

Scott was recognized for her patented work developing shortwave infrared imaging dyes designed to improve the visualization of cancer cells. By advancing dyes that can support deeper, clearer tissue imaging, her research has the potential to help clinicians more precisely identify tumor boundaries during cancer detection and treatment.

This achievement reflects the kind of chemistry that connects fundamental molecular design with urgent human needs. In the Scott research group, students and researchers use organic chemistry to create advanced materials with applications in biomedical imaging, electronics, coatings, adhesives, and other technologies. Her American Innovator recognition highlights not only the promise of this particular cancer-imaging technology, but also the broader impact of materials chemistry research taking place here at Mississippi State.

Scott’s work is featured in the Bayh-Dole Coalition’s 2026 Faces of American Innovation report, which highlights innovators whose discoveries demonstrate the importance of translating federally supported research into practical technologies. Award recipients will be recognized during a congressional briefing and advocacy conference in Washington, D.C., June 3–4.

The Department of Chemistry congratulates Dr. Scott and her research team on this outstanding national honor. Her creativity, persistence, and commitment to applying chemistry in ways that improve lives are an inspiration to our students, faculty, and broader MSU community.
