MSU Chemsitry Participates in 39th Annual Gibbs Conference
The Department of Chemistry is pleased to share its active participation in the 39th Gibbs Conference on Biothermodynamics, held September 27–30, 2025, at the Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center in Carbondale, Illinois. The annual conference, organized by the Gibbs Society of Biological Thermodynamics, brings together leading researchers in the thermodynamics of biological systems from across the U.S. and abroad.
This year’s meeting featured a keynote address by Gary Pielak (UNC Chapel Hill) and the Ackers Lecture by George Makhatadze (Rochester Polytechnic Institute), among other high-profile talks. The conference emphasizes opportunities for early-career scientists, including trainee oral presentations and poster sessions. MSU’s contingent included two faculty members, seven graduate students, and one undergraduate.
MSU’s presence extended beyond mere attendance. The department supported students attending the conference and contributed to its financial success. In addition, Professor Nick Fitzkee served as president of the Gibbs Society this year. Among the MSU participants were representatives from the Emerson, Fitzkee, and Johnson labs. All of the MSU trainees presented posters, and Katie Power from the Emerson lab delivered a flash talk at the "Saturday Night Thermo" event.
The conference drew scientists from many institutions to share advances in understanding biomolecular energetics, protein–ligand interactions, folding thermodynamics, and related topics. MSU’s active engagement underscores the department’s commitment to fostering excellence in biophysical chemistry and strengthening professional networks in the field.
