National Chemistry Week

Check out our 2018 NCW Tailgate video!

The theme for National Chemistry Week (NCW) for 2018 is "Chemistry is Out of This World".  Your SMACS crew has joined with CGSA this year to bring you the biggest NCW that Mississippi State University has seen yet.  A week-long set of events are taking place to celebrate the field of chemistry and will be concluded with our NCW Tailgate Extravanganza at the College of Arts & Sciences tailgate location for the Mississippi State vs. Texas A&M football game.  This will probably be a cooler week.  Be sure to drop Strangebrew to get a custom NCW -themed drink entitled "HC + C8H10N4O2" (hot chocolate with a shot of caffeine via espresso) to stay warm and cozy.

NCW Tailgate Extravaganza - Oct. 27th:

See our NCW Tailgate video!

The NCW Tailgate Extravaganza is an all-day tailgating experience for all ages.  Actual events and demos are subject to change and weather dependent.  Tables will be set up with fun chemistry demonstrations including, but not limited to:

  1. Iodine Clock - Watch a solution repeatedly change colors and learn about the chemistry behind this reaction.
  2. Dry Ice Bubbles - See giant bubbles form from the sublimation of solid carbon dioxide.  A spooky demo for a spooky holiday.
  3. Sulfur Hexafluoride - Be amazed as you see objects seemingly float on air.
  4. CO2 with Indicators - Watch this other solution repeatedly change colors as pH changes.
  5. Slime - This hands-on demonstration teaches you how to make your very own slime.

In addition to our demo booths, the ChemDawg Rockers will be throwing their Chemistry Tailgate Show throughout the day.  We will perform and explain various chemistry demonstrations including but not limited to:

  1. Elephant Toothpaste - See how the mixing of two solutions turns into a gigantic amount of foam.  Featuring a Jack-o-Lantern.
  2. Make a Cloud - What happens when you take liquid nitrogen (at -321oF) and dump it into a bucket containing warm water?  Come find out!
  3. SuperCool N2 - Absurdly low temperatures can transform an everyday object into something so brittle that it shatters with a tap of a hammer.
  4. Shrinking Balloons - See how many inflated balloons we can fit inside a gallon container.  The results may surprise you!
  5. Coke & Mentos - A crowd favorite and certainly a classic.

We will have face painting and lots of giveaways and goodies for kids and adults including stickers, periodic tables, etc. as well as a photo stand to get your own NCW picture!  We can even put your picture on a button on location and on demand!  Or you can get one of our other buttons we'll have with us.  Help SMACS fundraise with all button proceeds going to SMACS.
