Copper complexes bearing 1,10-phenanthroline and some of its oxidized derivatives were prepared and characterized by the Emerson/Stokes collaboration. X-ray crystallography shows that the ligands adopted different coordination geometries about the copper(II) ion. The [Cu(dafo)2OTf]OTf complex showed a drastically different redox potential than the other complexes and appeared to be the best catalyst to support Chan-Evans-Lam coupling of phenylboronic acids to imidazole.
