The Emerson/Stokes collaboration has reported the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic trials for a copper N-heterocyclic carbene complex. The complex was characterized using X-ray crystallography, UV-vis, EPR, cyclic voltammetry and ESI-HRMS. The tetradentate NHC was used to catalytically generate new C-N bonds from a series of phenylboronic acids and amines via the Chan-Evans-Lam coupling reaction. The redox properties indicate that the catalyst can readily access all three copper oxidation states under atmospheric conditions.
