Scholarship Opportunities

Chemistry offers a number of scholarships to outstanding and deserving students. A criterion for each scholarship is listed below. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours each semester to receive scholarships. The deadline for submitting scholarship applications for entering freshman students is December 1st. The deadline for returning students is February 1st.

Listing of Scholarships Awarded Through the Department of Chemistry:

Chemistry Annual Scholarship ($500-$1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major with a minimum 3.0 GPA in chemistry coursework and have demonstrated academic achievement. Scholarship awarded in increments of $250 - $500 for 2 semesters.

David E. Wigley Annual Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major having demonstrated academic achievement and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in chemistry coursework. Scholarship awarded in increments of $500 for 2 semesters.

Don G. Wright Memorial Scholarship ($1,250/semester)

Candidates must be a full-time freshman, sophomore, or junior college transfer and have demonstrated financial need. Awardee must maintain a 3.0 GPA and remain a full-time student majoring in chemistry.

Donald W. Emerich Endowed Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major having demonstrated academic achievement and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in chemistry coursework. Scholarship awarded in increments of $500 for 2 semesters.

Hach Scientific Teaching Scholarship ($10,000)

Candidates must be willing to commit to the teaching profession upon graduation. These awards may be made to incoming freshmen. Recipients must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are full-time chemistry majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated need. The award will be paid in increments of $5,000 for 2 semesters and may be renewed for up to four years provided the awardee meets scholarship criteria.

Harry C. and Mary Virginia Simrall Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major having demonstrated academic achievement and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in chemistry coursework. Scholarship awarded in increments of $500 for 2 semesters.

Ian Chen Endowed Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major having demonstrated academic achievement and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Scholarship awarded in increments of $500 for 2 semesters.

L.C. Behr Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates must be a full-time chemistry major having demonstrated academic achievement and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in chemistry coursework. Scholarship awarded in increments of $500 for 2 semesters.

Mary Virginia Simrall Endowed Undergraduate Research Scholarship ($1,000)

Candidates for this scholarship must be a chemistry major with a minimum 2.5 GPA and be actively involved in an original research project with a chemistry faculty member. The research is expected to result in the publication of the work in a scientific journal and to be presented by the student at a national research conference.

Peeples Endowed Scholarship ($500)

Will be awarded after the accumulation of sufficient earnings. Awarded to a sophomore who has achieved a 3.0 QPA and is a full-time student majoring in chemistry.

S-STEM scholarship and mentoring program: “Breaking the Silo: Mathematics as a Common Language in Science” (Up to $6300 per year).

This scholarship is designed to support deserving students majoring in Math, Chemistry, or Physics at Mississippi State University. First-generation students or students coming from struggling educational districts are especially encouraged to apply. This scholarship is designed to (1) Support students financially to complete a Bachelor's degree in the academic majors of Chemistry, Math, or Physics; (2) Support students academically through peer support and academic tutoring experiences; and (3) Expand student opportunities with career development seminars and undergraduate research experiences. Recipients of this scholarship will take a 1-credit hour course on Mathematics as a Common Language in the Fall semester and will participate in academic tutoring support for science and math classes. Additional workshops within this program focus on study skills and time management strategies, mentoring activities and peer connections, and incorporation of undergraduate research experiences for support and academic development.

Scholarship consideration will be based upon financial need, designation of academic major (CH, MA, or PH), high school GPA and ACT scores, along with essays and teacher recommendations that demonstrate student curiosity and commitment to academic excellence. A minimum math ACT score of 24 is required for consideration. Continued scholarship support will be contingent upon maintenance of a 3.00 GPA and participation in workshop activities.

Students interested in applying will need to complete the scholarship application and arrange for two letters of recommendation; one letter must be from a Math or Science High School Teacher; the second letter may be from any teacher who has taught the student within past two years. Demonstration of financial need through a FAFSA application will be required prior to scholarship award.
