About Us
Message from the Department Head
The Department of Chemistry welcomes you! Mississippi State University has had a rich history in pioneering chemical education in the Southeastern region of the US since 1878, having the oldest ACS accredited program in the state. We have recently hired six new faculty and staff for 2009 and we currently have an annual research budget in excess of $2.5 M. The Department also operates superb, state-of-the-art instrumentation facilities that support its research and teaching missions. We offer BA, BS and ACS BS undergraduate degrees. Our graduate program offers MS and PhD degrees in the four traditional areas of Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry as well as in the disciplines of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Chemical Biology, Chemical Physics, Environmental Chemistry, and Materials & Polymers.
With 17 research active faculty, you can expect to receive personal attention from your faculty mentor as you develop your own research skills and mature as a scientist. Faculty and students in the department also benefit from a number of close collaborations between chemistry and research centers and departments at MSU including the Biology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Departments, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Institute, the Electron Microscopy Center and the Institute for Clean Energy Technology.
Our commitment to excellence has been a hallmark of our department for over a century. Please take a moment to look at our website and discover what opportunities the Chemistry Department at Mississippi State University can offer you.
